Edward James Brown was the Captain of a company in the Missouri State Guard under Sterling Price.  He was in all the early battles in 1861 in Missouri and was captured with several hundred recruits on their way to join Price in the southern part of the state in December, 1861.  He received his parole and returned home to Fairville, Missouri. In July, 1863, some Federal Militia shot and killed him in front of his wife and children.
